My youngest came home from school holding something in a cupped hand and grinning like he'd found buried treasure. A caterpillar โ€” huge, almost the size of his palm. We put it in a jar with some leaves and a few air holes poked through cling film.

It made a chrysalis. (We called it a cocoon. Everyone does.)

Three weeks of checking the jar every morning. Then one day it opened, and a crumpled butterfly slowly stretched its wings on the kitchen counter while three children held their breath. It flew out the garden door and was gone.

That was nature study. We didn't have a lesson plan, a curriculum, or a single worksheet. We had a jar and some patience.

What nature study actually is

Nature study for preschoolers is noticing things outside and following what your child finds interesting. That is the whole method. A child crouching to watch ants carry a crumb, turning a leaf over to see what's underneath, asking why that bird keeps making the same noise โ€” all of it counts. There is no wrong way to do this with a child aged three to seven, and you cannot mess it up.

The phrase "nature study" sounds like something that belongs in a curriculum. It doesn't have to be. At this age, it's less a subject and more a way of paying attention โ€” one that happens to develop observation, vocabulary, patience, fine motor skills and scientific thinking without anyone noticing.

Including the children.

What you need

Less than you think. You need shoes that can get muddy and the willingness to stop walking every four metres. That is the actual list.

Everything else โ€” the magnifying glass, the laminator, the field guides, the colour-coded nature-table display styled for Instagram โ€” is nice but optional. I say this as someone who makes printable worksheets for a living. The walk comes first. The worksheet comes after, if it comes at all.

If you want a kit, here is one: a notebook, a pencil, and a bag for collecting things. Done.

(If you want the magnifying glass, get a cheap one. It will get dropped in a puddle within a fortnight.)

What it looks like at each age

Nature study looks different at three than it does at seven. This is obvious, but most guides online ignore it โ€” they say "preschoolers" and give advice that works for no particular child. Here's what I've actually seen:

Ages 3โ€“4: Everything goes in the mouth or the pocket. The walk takes twenty minutes to cover fifty metres. They'll notice things you've walked past a thousand times โ€” a crack in the pavement with a dandelion growing through it, a line of ants, the shape of a shadow. Your job is to slow down to their speed and narrate what you both see. Journalling at this age means you hold the pencil while they tell you what to draw.

Ages 5โ€“6: They want to know why. Why is that leaf red? Why do snails have shells? Where does the water go? You won't know the answers to most of these. That's fine โ€” looking it up together is better than pretending. This is the age where a nature journal starts to work, loosely. They can draw what they see (it will look nothing like what they see) and write a word or two underneath.

Ages 6โ€“7: They can sit still long enough to watch something happen. A bird building a nest, a spider wrapping a fly, a puddle slowly evaporating. This is where observation becomes a skill. Some children at this age will happily fill a nature journal; others still prefer collecting things in a bag. Both count.

Six ways to start this week

These work from ages three to seven. I've listed the honest age range and prep time for each, because "suitable for all ages" usually means "designed for none of them."

1. The twenty-minute wander (Ages 3+ ยท 0 min prep) Go outside with no agenda. Your only job is to follow your child's attention. When they stop, you stop. When they pick something up, you ask what they notice about it. That's it. If this feels too simple to count, it's working exactly as intended.

2. The collection box (Ages 3+ ยท 5 min prep) Give your child a shoebox or a paper bag. On your next walk, they collect anything that catches their eye โ€” stones, feathers, seed pods, suspicious-looking sticks. Back home, lay everything out and talk about it. What's the heaviest? The smoothest? Which one is their favourite, and why?

My son's collection includes fourteen rocks and something he insists is a dinosaur bone. We have not corrected him.

3. The bug watch (Ages 4+ ยท 0 min prep) Find a patch of ground โ€” garden, park, pavement crack โ€” and watch. Ants, beetles, woodlice, spiders. A magnifying glass helps, but eyes work fine. Set a timer for ten minutes if your child needs a frame. Most four-year-olds will give you twenty before they notice they're learning.

4. The weather diary (Ages 5+ ยท 5 min prep) Draw a grid on a piece of paper. Seven columns, one per day. Every morning, your child draws what the sky looks like โ€” sun, clouds, rain, wind, "that weird orange thing" (that was last Tuesday here). After a few weeks you have a record, and the beginning of pattern recognition, which is science whether or not anyone calls it that.

5. The life-cycle jar (Ages 4+ ยท 10 min prep) Find a caterpillar, a tadpole, or a snail. Put it in a ventilated jar with the right food. Watch what happens. This is the one that stuck with my kids more than anything else โ€” seeing a creature change with their own eyes, day after day, over three weeks. Worth more than anything we've printed.

6. The kitchen-window bird count (Ages 3+ ยท 5 min prep) Put out some bread or seeds near a window. Sit with your child. Count what arrives. If you have a bird book, try to name them together; if you don't, make up names. (My daughter called a bulbul "the bossy one" for six months. She wasn't wrong.)

The nature journal question

Everyone tells beginners to start a nature journal. Here is what nobody mentions: a nature journal for a three-year-old is one drawing, a pressed leaf and a suspicious amount of glue. For a five-year-old, it is two drawings, a stick taped to the page, and a dictated sentence about a worm.

This is fine. The point isn't the journal. The point is the looking.

If your child is under five, be the scribe. Write down what they tell you. "Big caterpillar." "The ant was carrying something." They will draw what they saw, in their own way, and it will not resemble the thing they saw. Also fine.

If they're five to seven, let them try a word or two. Short labels. Simple sentences. They are not writing a field guide โ€” they are recording that they were there and they noticed something. That matters more than the spelling.

When you don't have a forest

I live in Dubai. Nature study here doesn't look like the version on Pinterest โ€” there are no autumn leaves, no pinecone crafts, and in summer it's 45 degrees outside before lunch.

But we have Mushrif Park. I found it last year. The trees there are old โ€” genuinely old โ€” and the park is big enough that once you're inside it, the city disappears. My kids ride the bike trails; I take my mountain bike. It is a 22-minute drive, which counts as an expedition by Dubai standards.

And here is what doing nature study in a place that doesn't match the textbooks has taught me: nature is wherever you actually are. A balcony with a potted basil plant has visiting insects. A park fountain has birds. A car park has weeds forcing their way through the cracks, and weeds are some of the most determined organisms on earth. Your child doesn't need a meadow. They need something alive and ten minutes of your attention.

If you live somewhere hot, do your nature time early in the morning or after sunset. If you live in a flat with no garden, the nearest park, canal path, or patch of waste ground is enough. Nature study is an activity, not a location.

When it doesn't work

We tried planting seeds indoors once. Classic nature-study activity, right there in every guide. The air conditioning killed most of them before they germinated. The few that survived, we planted outside. The Dubai heat finished them off in about a week.

By any reasonable measure, a failure.

But my kids still talk about the three that sprouted โ€” tiny green shoots that lasted five days. They remember them better than half the things that went to plan.

The lesson: it does not have to work perfectly to work. A flopped experiment is still an experiment. (In our case, the lesson was "plants need things that this flat doesn't have," which is real science even if the seeds didn't make it.) If an activity falls flat, try a different one. There are always more bugs.

Common questions

What age should you start nature study? Now. Whatever age your child is right now. A two-year-old picking up a leaf is doing nature study. A seven-year-old sketching a bird in a notebook is doing nature study. The method scales because the method is just paying attention.

Do I need a curriculum? No. You need the outdoors and your child's curiosity. A curriculum can add structure if you want it โ€” we make one called The Field Guide Year โ€” but it is a tool, not a gatekeeper. Plenty of families do brilliant nature study with nothing more than a regular walk and a notebook.

What if my child just wants to run around and throw sticks? Let them. Throwing sticks is physics, and also joy. They will notice something eventually โ€” the weight of one stick versus another, the way bark peels, the beetle hiding underneath. Attention follows interest, not the other way around.
